Q&A with John Douglas, Northern Arizona University

May 11, 2022John Douglas

  1. What is your current role at your institution/company?
I am the Assistant Director, Corporate and Foundation Relations at Northern Arizona University.

  2. How long have you been a NACRO member?
I started my position at NAU about a year ago.  Shortly after I started, my supervisor said that I needed to join NACRO. So, I did. It wasn’t until the conference last July that I learned all about what NACRO was and what a resource it can be.
  3. What do you enjoy most about your NACRO membership?
I have been in fundraising for more than 20 years but this is my first job in academia fundraising. Although many of the principles of fundraising are transferable, there are many nuisances to fundraising in an academic setting. From the sessions I attended at the conference to meeting some of my professional colleagues at the mid-winter conference, my membership in NACRO has provided me with a professional network and educational best practices that I can draw upon to help me to better acclimate to my new role.

  4. So far, what has been your greatest Corporate Relations success?
My greatest Corporate Relations success was developing a national partnership with The Home Depot while I was with the American Diabetes Association. The partnership included financial support for several markets and a nationwide wellness educational program for Home Depot employees.

What has been your greatest challenge?
I would say my greatest challenge is being patient in situations that are completely out of my control.

  5. What’s something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?
Many, many years ago, I actually completed the half-marathon in Kona, Hawaii.
